Interview with model Kim Feenstra
She is not just known as the winner of Holland’s Next Top Model, she also shines in lots of campaigns and is now modelling our Fashion Fever collection. International model Kim Feenstra tells us all about her first fashion moment, who her favourite designers are and which trend she prefers to skip. Read on!
What was your very first fashion moment?
‘I remember it well! I was about 4 years old and I was always dressing up. My grandma had this brilliant wardrobe with doors that opened outwards. The doors had mirrors on, which I always set at a certain angle so that I could see myself 8 times over. It was so cool!
My hip grandma had lots of scarves, shawls and heels. Back in the sixties she was one of the first to take my mother to school wearing leather hot pants. That was very daring for a little village near Groningen.’
Which trend do you prefer to skip?
‘I always said I thought gladiator sandals were stupid. That’s until I was in New York and saw that they did look rather splendid with my outfit. I then wore them once and they will remain in my cupboard until another opportunity presents itself, ha ha. Those sandals with the extremely high soles are not really my thing… I’ll be passing on those.’
‘As a kid, our mother always bought me and my sister All Stars. I wore them a lot and I still do. They don’t really fall into the category ‘not on trend’, they are simply timeless. Is that allowed too?’
What can you just not say goodbye to?
‘My aunt from America was always great with clothes. For example, she’d go and drink a cup of coffee in Beverly Hills wearing a gala dress – awesome! Last year, she gave me that dress and I promised her I would wear it to a gala. What does it look like? Black, strapless, down to the floor, layers and a kind of veil you can wear as a stole or over your head. I really feel like an Arabian princess in that dress! Oh yes, my mother lived on Ibiza for a while and I have a beautiful leather Indian bag of hers which she had when she was 19. I wear that bag a lot in the summer.’
Who is your style icon?
‘I don’t really have a style icon but I draw a lot of inspiration from magazines. I used to be a fan of Rihanna’s looks, these days I can sometimes get into what Kim Kardashian is wearing. Another real star is the daughter of Lenny Kravitz, IT girl Zoë Kravitz.’
If you were to describe yourself as a piece of clothing, what would it be?
‘A good pair of comfy jeans! The classic is still Levi’s 501, Garcia Jeans also have a good fit, Cheap Monday and Diesel are my fave jeans brands.’
‘You can’t ask me that! Oh alright then… I think around 100. No, actually it’s more.’
Heels or sneakers?
‘I wear both a lot, but I’m crazy about thigh-length boots!’
What is your favourite fashion city?
‘London & New York. I take inspiration from the city and adjust my style to it.’
Who are your favourite designers?
‘Tony Cohen, Balmain, Saint Laurent, Hood by Air & Moschino.’
‘I always choose my outfit to suit my mood. But because I often have to wear clothes for work that are easy to take off and put back on, I go for sneakers, jogging pants and a T-shirt. But of course I love to dress up to the nines for a great party – with a matching lingerie set of course!’
What is your top fashion tip for our fans?
‘Above all, wear what you feel the most beautiful in. Speaking for myself, what really matters is how I have slept, how I feel when I get out of bed, how happy I am that day. But it’s always great to spoil yourself with a proper shopping session! Makes every girl happy, right?’
