Tips to protect your hair from the sun, the sea and the pool
We’re used to putting sun cream on to stop us from getting age spots and wrinkly skin. But did you know that your hair needs protecting too? Being in the sun, the sea and the pool on holiday can make your hair really dry, especially if it’s coloured. Want to keep the damage to a minimum? Read the following tips.
Use products that protect your hair from the sun, sea, and pool
If you’re planning on going to the hairdresser, then you’re best waiting until after your holiday before colouring your hair. The sun can make your hair lighter, and hair that’s just been coloured is even more vulnerable. Ask your hairdresser which products are good for protecting your hair while sunbathing or swimming, and which are good for repairing it afterwards. These products often contain UV filters that protect your hair from UV rays. They also make sure your hair stays hydrated and nourished. Tip: take a hair mask with you to leave in overnight!
Protect your hair
The best way to protect your hair is to avoid the sun. Lie with your head in the shade when sunbathing. If you prefer active holidays, wear a hat, cap or headscarf. Plaiting your hair or tying it up in a bun will help too.
Rinse your hair with water
Your hair tends to be greasier in the summer because you sweat more. But you should still try not to wash it too often. Use dry shampoo or just rinse it with water. Wet your hair with tap water before getting in the pool or going in the sea. This makes it less likely that chlorine and salt will be absorbed by your hair. It’s also a good idea to rinse your hair thoroughly when you get out.
Watch what you eat
It’s true – the food you eat affects your hair too. Make sure you drink enough water and eat plenty of fruit and veg for vitamins. Proteins and minerals are also important (these can be found in fish, meat, etc.) You can also take supplements that benefit your skin, hair and nails.
